In general, the easiest colors to live with are soft, muted, and easy on the eyes. However, a successful paint job is not dependent on always using whites and pastels. Strategic splashes of color can change a room's dynamics and add interest. A good rule of thumb is to limit loud or bright colors to very small spaces, such as a backsplash. Or consider using the louder colors in a palette only in the decorations of the room. Darker colors work well in smaller rooms to create intimacy, but keep in mind they will make any room appear smaller. Consider using slightly bolder colors on one or two walls with a neutral shade everywhere else, or painted on the lower half of the wall throughout.
